    Week 9: Song

    Reader's Workshop

    Homework: RJ 9.2

The period began like it does everyday, people walked through the door and took their seats. Some students were chattering, others were getting a head start on their Createober, the rest were writing their agendas. After a few minutes, Ezra began presenting is blog, it was exactly what you would expect from Ezra, need I say more? After the blog ended, Ezra picked me to come up and do the blog because it was allegedly my birthday. How did Ezra acquire this Sensitive Information? We may never know. Everyone sang "Happy Birthday," as I walked up to the blog table.

Everyone settled into Createober and began making their masterpieces, after they finished, Ms. Nakada called up Ezra who told us all about Chris Tyson, everyone's favorite pedophile. After Ezra, Miri took the stand and showed us some strawberries. Following Miri's Sock-tober, Nason showed us his drawing. When Nason finished Ms. Nakada showed us her bird, a kingfisher. Ethan's Car-tober was next; he showed us the Buggati Chiron and some other cool automobiles.

After Ethan's cars, we transition to our song, "Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts," by Gaslight Anthem. While Ms. Nakada was pulling the song up, Miri and Ezra engaged in some brainrot. Back to the song, "Blue Jeans and White T-Shirts," To me, this song seems to be about two people going through hard times but still loving each other. The song has a soft, sad tone. Speaking of tone, Ms. Nakada asked us how the tone of this song can relate to The Outsiders. The song has some lines where you can make some comparisons the themes from the book. Lines about class struggle, and concepts of brotherhood can be found in both works. Jonah points out how both the book and the song have characters that dream of a better life where they are more comfortable. The song has references to record players, and a payphone, two items that were common in the setting of The Outsiders.

The final minutes of class were spent discussing The Outsiders. We discussed the tragic hospital visit scene, where Johnny tells Ponyboy and Two-bit how he isn't ready to die, he's only sixteen and wants to see more of the world. Ponyboy runs into Johnny's mother. She blames the boys for Johnny's injury and scolds them for being "hoods." Mrs. Nakada is interrupted by the bell and reminds us to read chapters ten and eleven. After that we pack up and head to 4th period.
