Blog Time
We all shuffled into the class and slowly we found our seats. We started by writing down the agenda while this week's Take a Minute played in the background. Then, Aria read her blog, and Ms. Nakada spun a wheel with the names of everyone who hasn't made a blog yet. I slowly took my seat and started to write.
Ms. Nakada read out the quote for this week, "We welcome refugees not because they are American...but because we are American." by Krish O'mara Vignarajah, an immigrants' rights activist. Ms. Nakada discussed how up until Trump started his first presidential term, America was a country of asylum for immigrants and refugees.
Our question this week was "How should countries respond to those seeking asylum?" Ms. Nakada asked us what we knew about asylums. Luke mentioned how he is reminded of insane asylums, safe places for people with mental illness, and Ezra explained how asylums are safe places, which Ms. Nakada agreed with. Ms. Nakada mentioned that people who had to flee because of the fires are able to go to any schools they want to because they now either don't have homes, or they cannot return home. That is an example of an asylum.
Ms. Nakada instructed us to take out our I.O.&.B.A. books and the class began to read. She said that we should be getting close to the end of our books by now.
Ms. Nakada told us to pack up and soon the bell rang.
