Beginning of Class
As students began to shuffle into class and began taking down their seats, some began writing down the agenda in their binder reminders. After the bell rang, Ms. Nakada began the take a minute video, which talked about gratitude, and how much a letter of gratitude could impact you and the receiver of the note. She told us that it was the best part of her day when a student read a gratitude letter to her. Next, Leslie came up to read her blog. After she read it, she asked Ms. Nakada to spin a wheel to determine the next blogger. She also asked her to take of Nason's name from the wheel. The wheel spun and eventually landed on my name. I walked up to the blogger's seat as Ms. Nakada began collecting the remaining trip slips.
Middle of Class
Once the class was ready, and everyone had their English notebooks out, we were instructed to write the title of the TED Talk we would listen to, as well as the speaker's name down in our English notebooks. We drew a column, where we would write questions, and write the pros and cons of the Golden Rule. Ms. Nakada began the video, which discussed the importance of the Golden Rule, and the class sat in silence as it played. It was paused a couple of times, so we could write some notes down. When the video finished playing, we discussed and wrote things we noticed down in our notebooks. Ms. Nakada pointed out that unlike the take a minute video, the TED Talk discussed practicing gratitude all day, every day. We also talked about how the media has a bias and that we should be more open minded towards other opinions. We also pointed out that we should call out behaviors that are not compassionate.
After some more discussion, essay prompt papers for our literature circle books were passed out, and Ms. Nakada gave us examples on how the titles of our books related to major themes in our text, like in To Kill a Mockingbird, Just Mercy, and Brown Girl Dreaming. This was one of our prompts for our essay. Another prompt was how characters in our books took a risk to take a stand. The third prompt asked us about two other people in history who took a stand, like the characters in our books. The fourth was about the Golden Rule in our books, and the last one was a personal essay. Ms. Nakada told us that we shouldn't do the personal essay, since it would be too easy for us. We were invited to grab our books from the back of the room and to begin filling out our sheets.
End of Class
For the rest of the class, students quietly discussed with each other and began to write down in their papers, when the bell rang. We began packing up and we were dismissed to fourth period.
